The right time
When should a child first see an orthodontist?
Orthodontic associations such as the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend a first check-up around age 7. At that age baby and permanent teeth coexist, so growth or bite problems can be spotted early.
That first visit doesn't mean starting treatment — often monitoring is enough. What matters is knowing whether something should be corrected while your child is still growing.
Warning signs
What signs suggest your child may need orthodontics?
If you notice any of these, a consultation will tell you whether it needs attention or just monitoring:
- Very crowded, crooked or widely spaced teeth.
- Crossbite: upper teeth sitting inside the lower teeth.
- Upper teeth that stick out, or lower teeth in front of the upper ones.
- Frequent mouth breathing or snoring.
- Thumb-sucking or pacifier use beyond the early years.
- Losing baby teeth much earlier or later than usual.
- Difficulty chewing or biting.
Dentofacial orthopedics
What is dentofacial orthopedics and what is it for?
Dentofacial orthopedics is treatment for growing children that aims to guide the development of the jaws and bite with appliances, usually before all permanent teeth have come in.
It's recommended based on the diagnosis. When indicated, it can simplify or complement later orthodontic treatment. Dr. Ana explains to parents what the goal is, how the appliance works and what care it requires.

At what age should a child first see an orthodontist?
Orthodontic associations such as the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend a first check-up around age 7. That doesn't mean every child needs treatment at that age: the visit shows whether it's better to act now, wait, or simply monitor.

What signs suggest my child might need orthodontics?
Signs include very crowded or widely spaced teeth, a crossbite, upper teeth that stick out, frequent mouth breathing, thumb-sucking beyond the early years, or losing baby teeth much earlier or later than usual. If you notice any of these, a consultation is a good idea.
Do I need a consultation before starting treatment?
Yes. During the consultation Dr. Ana evaluates the position of your teeth and your bite, explains the options available and gives you an estimated duration and cost for your case. Orthodontic treatment requires diagnosis, planning and professional follow-up, and shouldn't start without that evaluation.
How much do braces or aligners cost in Bogotá?
The cost depends on the type of treatment (aligners, braces or orthopedics) and on how complex each case is, so it isn't possible to quote a price without an evaluation. At the consultation you receive estimated costs for the options that apply to your case so you can compare them clearly.
